Learning freedom

We believe it is important that our youngest generation learns why an annual commemoration is so important and valuable. How do you explain to children the value of freedom when many of them have always lived in freedom? One might almost think it is "just the way it is." Unfortunately, that hasn't always been the case, even in the Netherlands. We want to contribute to ensuring that the stories from then, and also those from today, are not lost but are instead heard.

(In collaboration with our partners), we offer various guest lectures and educational programs. These are primarily suitable for children and young people aged 10 to 18, but tailored programs are also possible in some cases. The available options are listed below.

Adoption monument

Every year, the Kite Monument on the Meerpaalplein is adopted by group 7 of one of the primary schools in the municipality of Dronten. These pupils take care of the monument for a year.

Exchange Edinburgh

Since 2022, an exchange has been taking place between Almere College in Dronten and Stewarts Melville College in Edinburgh. William Ward, one of the crew members of the Lancaster ED 357 (our monument) went to school there.

Poetry Contest

Since 2024, the Ichthus College in Dronten has held a poetry competition. Students receive a guest lecture from a veteran, information about commemoration in Dronten and write a poem. The winning poem will be recited on 4 May at the commemoration on the square.

Swimming tournament

Every year swimming club de ZuiderZeeZwemmers organizes the Airgunners swimming tournament. Pupils of group 8 of primary schools from the Municipality of Dronten can participate in the competition.

Guest lectures

There are various possibilities for guest lectures and lectures. From a lecture on the history of remembrance in Dronten to an offer from the veterans institute for schools.

Airgunnersroom

In De Meerpaal there is a permanent exhibition about the Airgunners. The exhibition shows gifts that have been donated by the Airgunners to the municipality of Dronten since 1975. A visit is possible on request.
